Abstract

This study explores the positioning of gender in a collaborative workshop of a group of adolescents participating in the “Improvement of Learning and Performance Programme” in a state-subsidised school in Madrid. I used different ethnographic data collection techniques within an experimental collaboration which has facilitated the construction of a space for joint exploration: the gender workshop. Understanding identities as discursive processes and gender from a feminist approach, I use positioning analysis to analyse the data. Following this logic the results are structured at three levels. The first level shows how the stories, co-constructed in the workshop, emerge and how the group positions itself in relation to them. The second level illustrates the interactional co-construction of the collaborative space and how the group has positioned itself in relation to it. And finally, in the third level, the group’s positions towards the gender ideologies that we reworked in the workshop are shown. The implications of collaborative methodology and the co-construction of gender identity in school contexts are discussed. Keywords: Experimental Collaboration – Gender Identity – Feminism – Adolescence – Positioning Analysis.
